When I did the Vipassana in Chiang Mai, Thailand I was already a practicer of meditation. It always helped me to unwind, when I was nervous or anxious about anything. I learned many interesting meditation techniques in the time I lived in the monestary with monchs and meditated 8 hours a day in Chiang Mai, Thailand. What sounds impossible, helped me in so many ways of my life, for example point number 1: Everything feels so much easier and lighter. For me personally there was so much less drama in my life, as everything is to be observed and not reacted to. I wrote down more of my personal benefits and also noted down some scientificly researched benefits of meditation:
Less overthinking, less drama and less overreacting. Everything is being observed, not reacted to. This means life feels so much easier and lighter. It really makes an Impact, if you choose to or not to react and how.
As we Yogis would say the Kundalini is able to arise in a straight spine and allows a free Prana flow. When we sit in Sukhasana or Padmasana or Thunderbolt pose with a straight spine we let the life energy flow in and out of our bodies, not just our physical body.
Another factor is that sagging or slouching posture reflects a state of mind. It comes from a subtle or unconscious desire to hide ourselves. While meditation we are not supporting this patterns. We do the opposite. We sit comfortable and confident in our true hight, not hiding ourselves.
On a physical level the nervous system runs electrical impulses up and down the spine what is easier with a straight spine.
The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) found that mindful meditation reduces pain sensations in the body without using the brain’s natural opiates (Cherkin, Sherman, Balderson, Cook, Anderson, Hawkes, Hansen, and Turner, 2016). And I personally had the experience of being able to control my body sensations more through meditation, for example feeling of coldness, tiredness, hunger and pain. Once the information arrives in our brain, when we put our awareness to the pain for example during meditation and we dont put a negative label on it, the pain get´s weaker and even can disappear. One of many benefits of meditation.
Our immune system has been for a long time considered purely physical, even though it was not understood completely. But in the 80s it was discovered that the immune system is highly intelligent. This means that our thoughts, moods, sensations, and expectations are transmitted to our immune cells. While meditating, we change the message immediately. Meditation boosts antibodies, meditation stimulates immune system brain-function regions and meditation creates a positive mental environment for the immune system to flourish.
Meditation helps relax your body, releasing tension and placing you in a peaceful state in which you’re more likely to fall asleep.
Stress cause increased levels of the stress hormone cortisol. This produces many of the harmful effects of stress, such as the release of inflammation-promoting chemicals called cytokines. With meditation we are provocing the opposite effect.
Here are 9 easy ways for better sleep
Meditation can help with lenghtening the attention span and reduce age-related memory loss. 12 studies with older participants showed, that mulpiple meditation styles are improving mental quickness, increased attention and memory. (1)
Inflammatory chemicals called cytokines, which are released in response to stress, can affect mood, leading to depression. A review of several studies suggests meditation may reduce depression by decreasing these inflammatory chemicals. Meditating makes us emotionally stronger and therefore healthier. We learn how to develope willpower, overcome our bodys or minds lazyness and become stronger and healthy.
